How vintage t-shirt sizes actually measure

We measured 2,633 vintage t-shirts. Every listing in this shop carries the chest and body length taken flat on the garment, so the numbers add up to something worth publishing: what the size on the label actually means once you put a tape measure on the shirt.

Chest and body length by label size

All measurements are taken flat, armpit to armpit for the chest and collar seam to hem for the length, on a garment with no one inside it. Figures are the median of every shirt in that label size, with the full spread underneath.

Why the label alone is not enough

The ranges overlap heavily. An XL in this dataset runs from 19.8 to 28.35 inches across the chest, while a Large runs from 20.28 to 26.18. A shirt labelled XL can be narrower than one labelled L, because the label was printed by a different maker in a different decade.

That is why our listings lead with measurements instead of the size letter. If you are buying vintage online, the tape measure is the only figure that travels well between 1990 and today.

Where the data comes from

The set covers shirts dated by the year in their own names, so it reflects what actually passed through one vintage shop rather than a market sample: 1970s: 2, 1980s: 99, 1990s: 624, 2000s: 552, 2010s: 198, 2020s: 8. Most are single-piece garments — one shirt, one size, one condition — which is why the dataset keeps growing one item at a time rather than in batches.

Method and limits

  • Chest and length are measured flat in inches, then converted to centimetres; both units appear on every listing.
  • 52 older listings had no measurements and are excluded; 3 records were excluded as implausible data-entry values.
  • This is one shop's stock, not a survey of the vintage market. Different makers, countries and decades shift the medians.
  • Medians are used rather than averages so a single mislabelled outlier cannot drag the number.
